JFK 50 Miler

Jan 26th, 2010 - Training - NYC - 3.1

Day 26 - This was my first trip back to NYC since the marathon back in Nov '09. It wasn't my best marathon (3:20) last year, but I love coming back to this city! There's something about this city that makes you want to run: the energy, the sights, the sounds, the traffic? Definitely the traffic.

I was back in NYC for my interview with the FBI (Special Agent candidate - Phase II) the following morning at 7AM. My original plan was to put in a run around the city once I got to the hotel around 9PM, grab a bite to eat, do some studying, and go to bed.

Unfortunately, my flight from Boston got delayed by an hour and I didn't land in NYC until about 9:30PM, and then it was a 30 minute taxi ride from LGA to my hotel, which overlooked Ground Zero. More about that later.

I checked into my room at 10:30 and boy was I was hungry! I knew I wouldn't want to go for a run on a full stomach, and then it would be too late to go for a run once the food digested, so I decided to just suck it up and head down to the gym and get in my 3 miles for the day.

The hotel gym was on the 5th floor, and it was completely empty (I guess nobody else had to put in their 3 miles for their own pact). The equipment was very nice (it better be for $300 per night!), but the most amazing aspect was the view! It overlooked what was once the World Trade Center towers, Ground Zero, and now the construction site of the forthcoming towers. It was a very emotional moment to look out over what was once there, but at the same time, very awe-inspiring to see what was going to rise out of the ashes.

I quickly put in a 5k (6:41 pace) and headed back to the room to grab some dinner at 11PM! Ordered chicken soup and a chicken salad wrap...$45!! Our tax dollars hard at work.

Time for bed. I am so tired that I couldn't think of one single witty thing to add to this entry....pants on the floor!!
