JFK 50 Miler

August 5th, 2010 - Race - Lowell, MA - 3.1

Day 214 - Summer took a vacation for three weeks, but it's now back with the continuation of the Good Times Summer Series!

Race #4 in the series promised to be an interesting one with most of the runners decked out in their birthday suits, or close to it.

(Dave living up to his nickname)

Some better than others.

(Karen, making the rest of us look bad!)

My legs felt a little tired from last night's 5 mile trail race up at Mine Falls, so I couldn't get a really good sense of what I wanted to accomplish tonight. I definitely didn't think a PR was in store given the tired legs and the high temps (mid 80's but overcast) and humidity. Sub 18 seemed a little bit more reasonable.

One thing was for sure, I wasn't going to let EJ beat me :)

Right off the line, EJ and his phone sex operator breathing stuck with me for the next 2.95 miles!

(Lock Stepped and Two Smoking Runners)

My plan for this race was to go out at a steady pace, to start, and see what I had around the Aiken St bridge, where I could let loose without dying short of the finish line.

I ran a slower mile 1 and 2 as compared to my run, from 3 weeks prior, where I went gangbusters for the first 2 miles. I ended up dying around mile 2.5 and got passed by three other runners (EJ included), and finished with a time of 18:14.

For tonight's race, I managed to pull away from EJ around the 3 mile mark for the photo finish.

(A lot closer than this image illustrates)

Finished 4th overall (behind a new runner, Titus, and Cody) in 18 flat, or 18:01 per my watch.

Three races left in the series and I should be done with this distance for the rest of the year. Need to start focusing on the long distance stuff, quickly!

First run around my new home town of Tewksbury planned for tomorrow, and then back to GLRR track on Thursday!
